God & The Gay Christian: An Evening with Matthew Vines

This even was scheduled before the horrific attack at Pulse nightclub in Orlando and we were grateful to Matthew, Christina and Robin for speaking and performing at what became a moment for mourning, remembering and hope.

You can hear audio and see the video feed below.

Note: Our A/V department apologizes for the quality of the audio and video. It does no justice to the performances and sharing we heard during this event but it was the best we could get together on short notice.

Also here's an interview Oregon Public Broadcasting did with Matthew and Adam Phillips:

Imagine a fully inclusive, welcome and affirming faith community. In fact, an LGBTQ inclusive community of faith is happening. Join Matthew Vines, a nationally recognized leader on inclusion, with local voices, to be part of this spirit-led, faith driven movement for inclusion. In this Pride-centered event, Matthew Vines will share his own story and what the Bible actually says about same-sex orientation. We’ll also be joined by out worship leader Christina Cobb (Seattle’s EastLake Church) who will share music as well as hear perspectives from Portland’s own Robin Knauerhase.

More on Matthew Vines:

As a young Christian man, Matthew Vines harbored the same basic hopes of most young people: to some-day share his life with someone, to build a family of his own, to give and receive love. But when he realized he was gay, those hopes were called into question. The Bible, he’d been taught, condemned gay relationships.

Feeling the tension between his understanding of the Bible and the reality of his same-sex orientation, Vines devoted years of intensive research into what the Bible says about homosexuality. With care and precision, Vines asked questions such as:

• Do biblical teachings on the marriage covenant preclude same-sex marriage or not?

• How should we apply the teachings of Jesus to the gay debate?

• Can celibacy be a calling when it is mandated, not chosen?

• What did Paul have in mind when he warned against same-sex relations?

Unique in its affirmation of both an orthodox faith and sexual diversity, God and the Gay Christian has sparked heated debate, sincere soul searching, and widespread cultural change on the issue of what it means to be a faithful gay Christian.

More on Christina Cobb:

Christina Cobb is a worship leader at EastLake Church outside of Seattle. You can see more of Christina’s story on coming out and being included and affirmed here https://vimeo.com/126321458

More on Robin Knauerhase:

By day, Robin Knauerhase is a Research Scientist with the Intel Labs, where she has been researching software techniques to reduce power consumption in "extreme scale" supercomputers.  In 20+ years at Intel, she has been involved with research from tiny mobile devices and laptops through cloud/datacenters and high-performance computing.  She is active in academic collaboration, shepherding Intel grants to universities and participating in collaborative research.

Outside of work, Robin whimsically thinks of herself as an "iconoclastic punny geek Christian, aspiring polymath".  She is a board member of the Association of Welcoming and Affirming Baptists and Council Member for the GLAD Alliance (sister LGBT group for Disciples of Christ).  Robin enjoys volunteer work with her church and The Living Room; social justice policy, thought and debate; clever puns, and spicy foods.  She lives in downtown Portland, Oregon with her wonderful cat Libby and is a member of First Christian Church, Portland.
