Board: Christ Church Is Leveling Up

Christ Church's new Board will help guide governance, structure and growth in the year ahead!

Starting a church is strange business. Most of them start in a living room somewhere with a small band of people. Our's did that, while also including home-made hummus and conversations for the common good. Then we moved to launching a weekly Sunday gathering. Then we got kicked out of our denomination for LGBTQ inclusion. Most churches definitely don't do that as the second step.

And, in fact, many churches don't make it past the first 18 months, and those that do have a hard time surviving past three years.

We're four and half years old and, in so many ways, just getting started.

That's why we're excited to announce our new Board - 9 incredible people who will help us level up when it comes to governance, outreach and community.

The work of our Board is fairly straight forward: a year-long charge to help come up with a consensus-based approach on how we make decisions as well as steward our unique vocation as an open, active & inclusive community.

Here's a little bit about each of our Board members:

What's your favorite Bible verse or story?

The Bible and I have a complicated relationship... to say the least. I grew up with the Bible used as a weapon, so any verse that showcases the Bible as a balm to the wounded speaks to me right now. A couple of short favorites (all from The Message version because I struggle to read any other version right now):

  • Isaiah 26:3 Throw wide the gates so good and true people can enter.
  • John 14: 27 I'm leaving you well and whole. That's my parting gift to you. Peace. I don't leave you the way you're used to being left - feeling abandoned, bereft. So don't be upset.                 Don't be distraught!
  • Psalm 31:24 Be brave. Be strong. Don't give up. Expect God to get here soon.
  • 1 Corinthians 13:12-13 We don't yet see things clearly. We're squinting in a fog, peering through a mist. But it won't be long before the weather clears and the sun shines bright! We'll  see it all then, see it all as clearly as God sees us, knowing him directly just as he knows us! But for right now, until that completeness, we have three things to do to lead us toward that consummation: Trust steadily in God, hope unswervingly, love extravagantly.

What's your favorite Bible verse or story?

My favorite story is from Genesis 18:16-33 in the Hebrew Bible. In the story, Abraham questions God's ethics and boldly negotiates with God to act justly. His courage, pesistence and intimacy while wrestling with God is a model for me as navigate big and little questions in life.

What neighborhood you live in? My partner Kristen and I live downtown, in the Pearl.

What do you like to do for fun? I enjoy dancing the Lindy hop, mountain climbing, and traveling. When I'm not doing one of those things, you might overhear me discussing public policy, music, culture, design and world affairs with my friends and family over coffee or beer.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” - Matthew 11:28, 30

Adam Phillips (He/Him/His)

What's your favorite Bible verse or story?

Psalm 139. It's a poem of sorts that helps me root down in the really real. And you could get scared about this all seeing Eye but the truth behind the truth is that the Divine is with us in the muck, the mire, the mountaintop, and even at that street cart food stand on the farthest reaches across the sea.

What neighborhood you live in? NoPo -  Kenton vibes.

What do you like to do for fun? I like to listen to music with Sarah and Desmond. And watch soccer and ride my bike for very long distances.
